PARTNERSHIP WITH WOOMELANG UNITING CHURCH |
| We at Pilgrim have a long
standing (18 years) Country /City twinning partnership with the UC congregation
at Woomelang in the Mallee region. |

In 1992, one of the
leading lay people from Pilgrim, Brenda Cooper, was ordained and her first
appointment in 1993 was to Woomelang, a small town in the north of the
Wimmera. She conceived early in her ministry the idea of creating a
relationship between her old congregation – Pilgrim Uniting Church – and her
new one.

Woomelang is a
small town experiencing what many small Australian towns have been going
through – decline in services (banks, P.O. etc.), few jobs for young people,
leading to population decline. In such situations the Church declines as
well.

The first activity, a visit from Pilgrim to Woomelang,
occurred in July of 1995 and a number of new friendships between
the two congregations were established, some of which are still strong
today.
Since the
first activity, we have shared
several visits to each others communities,
our youth have led worship at Woomelang and, we have shared a combined
Church Family Camp
at Norval Lodge or Norval House, Hall's
Gap
2003-2009. In 2010, we met for a picnic at Bendigo.

Our ongoing
relationship with the people of Woomelang enables us to understand the
difficulties our rural sister churches are experiencing and to support them
with our prayers and our financial gifts
to the Share Appeal. We have also made
direct gifts to Woomelang to maintain this congregation's tenuous ministry
capacity. In 2005, we assisted
Woomelang with the purchase of a
computer to support
music in worship in the absence of an organist/pianist. A picture of the
computer being set up by some Woomelang members and a video recording of it
providing music can be seen by
clicking here.
More recently, the Pilgrim choir recorded hymns for use on the computer
in worship at Woomelang.
It is a good thing to be connected with one of our struggling
country congregations. |
